With reference to my confidential despatch 742459 of the 21st August, 1925, I have the honour to

report the further course of events in connection

with the local situation.

2 Infar as the maintenance of law and order

within the Colony is concerned, the position is entirely normal. In fact the number of prisoners in gaol is well below the average, and, though this is no doubt largely accounted for by the

considerable reduction in the population, a con- tributory cause is undoubtedly to be found in the

weeding out of undesirables which has been systematically carried on. The street searches,

referred to in my previous despatches, have been

suspended. There has been no further dynamite

incident or other case of violence or intimidation.

3. There have been two further incidents on

the frontier since the date of my last despatch. I enclose a copy of a police report regarding an occurrence on the 27th August. On the 29th August the Punjabi picket was again fired upon by a group of ten Chinese soldiers and the fire was returned. Five shots were fired on each side at a range of
